                      PROSPECTUS  2007/2008   (A to I)

AMBLERS 1 & 2  Country walks of about 4-5 miles, gentler than the Walking Group, with the opportunity for a pub lunch afterwards. Occasional day walks. Strong shoes/walking boots required.

ARCHAEOLOGY We are a group of interested amateurs which has speakers or videos and encourages members to talk about holidays of archaeological interest. We make visits to archaeological sites and an annual group holiday is arranged.

ARCHITECTURE Study a wide range of Architecture, to include modern as well as earlier periods. It is intended to have occasional visiting speakers, visits and presentations by members.

ART - APPRECIATING PICTURES   A  group studying the "History  of Art" mainly by periods and painters who made their mark within a given art movement.  We  encourage members of our group to research and give presentations with PowerPoint, slide projectors or video film using materials from the Central U3A Resources Centre and library books or own resources.  Occasionally we invite guest speakers.                                                                                                                               

ASPECT OF ART Following Sister Wendy's History of Painting. As this is a narrow trail we branch out to other  painters  alive at the time and/or pick up on earlier influences.                                                                                                       

ART HISTORY STUDY GROUP.  The group are continuing their studies using Sister Wendy and relevant art books. They will be finishing the French Romantics and entering the age of Impressionism. 

ART HISTORY RESEARCH GROUP.  We work together to explore, increase our understanding and appreciation of art. There are gallery visits, occasional lectures and study tours.

ASTRONOMY.  General studies in Astronomy and cosmology, where members make contributions on subjects of their own choice. Group discussions take place at the end of each session.

BADMINTON A mixed group playing for pleasure -don't worry about the standard.

BALLROOM DANCING. All abilities are welcome. Ballroom, Latin American and the occasional fun dance will be covered.

BIRDWATCHING.  Visits are made to nature reserves and other suitable places to observe birds. We are a self-help group that welcomes experienced birders and beginners. Trips are mostly local with occasional outings further afield.                                                                    

BOWLS Groups 1 & 2   Mixed ability bowlers in different teams each session. Appropriate footwear required, otherwise stockinged feet.  Woods provided if necessary. Beginners are advised to  have a coaching course with the Recreation Centre.  One group only, preference to be clearly stated.                                                                                                                

BOWLS (Outdoors)   Summer term only.  All levels.  Appropriate footwear required.  Limited woods available.

BRIDGE BEGIN This is for those wishing to learn to play Bridge. Ideally should have some card playing experience, such as Whist. The aim is teach new players the elements of Bridge using the Acol bidding system.

BRIDGE   A group for those who know the Acol system. Our aim is to help improve their bridge in an enjoyable manner.                                                                                                                          

CALLIGRAPHY A self help group working together on calligraphy. 

CANOEING   We use open, Canadian, canoes, on the Basingstoke Canal in the area around Fleet.  All levels of ability are welcome and instruction is available for beginners. NOT DURING WINTER MONTHS 

COMEDY  APPRECIATION A group studying the life and work of particular comedians or of comedy on stage, film, songs or poetry.

COMPUTING FOR BEGINNERS .Two 12 week courses to be run at Wavell School. Each course will have the same content. Places will be limited and those attending must have access at home to a personal computer, with access to the internet.

COMPUTING, CONTINUED An eight week course for those with basic knowledge but seeking to expand their ability to use Information and Communications Technology.                                      

COOKERY FOR MEN.  The course aims to teach men basic cookery skills, in a light-hearted atmosphere, but with emphasis on good technique, hygiene and safety.   

CRAFTS  A self help group. Members work individually on personal projects. Most aspects of craft can be taught, but we are limited by the venue. We cannot do practical crafts e.g. paper making, basket making etc.

 CREATING CARDS A and B Two groups working at creating greetings  cards. No previous experience is required. Everything is provided for a small charge.  Techniques will be demonstrated and skills and equipment shared. 

 CROQUET   Come and try Croquet.  Tuition and equipment provided. The venue is Knellwood House, Canterbury Road.  Every week from Easter through to the October half term.   

CRYPTIC CROSSWORDS   How to tackle all kinds of crosswords with particular attention to cryptic and looking at aids available in solving them.                          

DISCUSSION An informal and friendly group who discuss a wide range of topics, some serious, some lighthearted. Whether you wish to share your views with others or just to listen, you are assured of a warm welcome.

DRAWING Members are encouraged to work on their own projects, using any drawing media of their choice i.e. pencil, pastels, charcoal, etc with help and advice from the tutor

DRAWING- BEGINNERS A year course covering the basics of drawing techniques. Pencil, pen and ink, charcoal and coloured crayons are covered. Suitable for complete beginners. 

FAMILY HISTORY   A  self-help group for those who wish to trace their family history. Fortnightly discussions alternate with computer genealogy sessions with internet access. Both beginners and more experienced researchers are welcome.                                                

FLOWER ARRANGING    Flower arrangement demonstration followed by a workshop supervised by tutor.                                                                                   

 FOLK DANCING   We dance traditional, square and barn dances under the supervision of three teachers. Great fun and good exercise. No previous knowledge required.                                            

FRENCH BASIC   For those with basic knowledge of French, using the BBC publication French Experience 1.  

 FRENCH CHAT For those with reasonable fluency which they wish to maintain and improve.

FRENCH INTERMEDIATE   For members with a knowledge of French using current French publications

GARDENING Sessions are arranged on a variety of gardening topics. Visits to gardens will be arranged. 

GERMAN BEGINNERS . For those with no German or those who half remember School German.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               

GERMAN CONVERSATION  Basic knowledge  of German required. Improving our vocabulary and conversation skills through role-play translations and reading.

 GOOD COMPANIONS   A group for those seeking opportunities for  outings and/or holidays, something to do at weekends or simply making new friends. Monthly meetings to discuss arrangements and to welcome new members.  

HANDBELLS To develop the skills involved in making music using handbells and to have fun doing it.                                                                                         

HISTORY EARLY EUROPEAN European History from the Black Death, through the Hundred Years War and including witchcraft and the Reformation.                                                                                                                           

HISTORY-TALKING ABOUT  A self-help group that researches on a personal basis a topic chosen by the group. This research is debated by the group to identify any implications/consequences for present day matters. 

INDUSTRIAL ARCHAEOLOGY AND SCIENCE Lectures by visiting speakers or group members on our industrial heritage and aspects of science. Five visits arranged during the year.
