PROSPECTUS  2010/2011

 

AMBLERS 1 & 2 Country walks of about 4-5 miles, with the opportunity for a pub lunch afterwards. Occasional day walks. Strong shoes/walking boots required

ARCHITECTURE . We  hope to move towards most sessions being talks by members of the he Group. Assistance is offered to help with the preparation of presentations. The group has centrated on British architecture of all periods. We will continue to have visiting speakers and to arrange visits.

ART - APPRECIATING PICTURES   We cover any aspects of art that are of interest to the group.  At each meeting a particular artist, school or genre is studied and presented by means of a PowerPoint presentation or the occasional video.  Presenters are drawn from the group. We touch on the historical background but concentrate on viewing and appreciating the works themselves.  Once a term there is a visit to an art gallery or exhibition.

ASPECT OF ART Following Sister Wendy's History of Painting. As this is a narrow trail we branch out to other  painters  alive at the time and/or pick up on earlier influences.

ART HISTORY RESEARCH We take a theme or period of art and work together to explore and increase our understanding and appreciation. Members are encouraged to share and make presentations.It can be just a few minutes or longer. There is no pressure to contribute. All are welcome to come and enjoy the exchange of ideas. We use books, videos, DVDs, and PowerPoint presentations. There are gallery visits, occasional lectures, and study tours.

ART HISTORY STUDY  The Group will be studying European art from16th Century, using Sister Wendy and relevant art books.

ASTRONOMY. General studies in Astronomy and Cosmology, where members make contributions on subjects of their own choice. Group discussions take place at the end of each session.

BADMINTON A mixed group playing for pleasure -don't worry about the standard.

BIRDWATCHING  Visits are made to nature reserves and other suitable places to observe birds. We are a self-help group that welcomes experienced birders and beginners. Trips are mostly local with occasional outings further afield.

BOWLS Groups 1 & 2 Mixed ability bowlers in different teams each session. Appropriate footwear required, otherwise stockinged feet.Woods provided if necessary. Beginners are advised to have a coa-ching course with the Recreation Centre.

BOWLS (Outdoors)  Summer term only.All levels.Appropriate footwear required. Limited woods available.

BRIDGE  A group for those who know the Acol system. Our aim is totheir bridge in an enjoyable manner.      

BRIDGE INTERMEDIATE To develop use of the ACOL bidding system to a standard that will enable members to join the bridge group.

CALLIGRAPHY A self help group working together on calligraphy.

CARD AND BOARD GAMES  Having fun playing a variety of Card and Board games.

COMEDY APPRECIATION A group studying the life and work of particular comedians or comedy on TV, radio, stage, film, songs or poetry.    

COMPUTING GETTING MORE FROM YOUR PC.  A 4 week course on File & folder organisation, desktop organisation, and keeping your computer maintained and secure.

COMPUTING FOR BEGINNERS  A 4 week course for absolute beginners, covering  Basic PC operations, simple internet browsing and email usage..

COMPUTINGDIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY A 4 week course providing an introduction to storing and very simple editing of digital photos on a PC..

COOKERY FOR MEN.The course aims to teach men basic cookery skills, in a light-hearted atmosphere, but with emphasis on good technique, hygiene and safety.    

CRAFTS  A self help group. Members work individually on personal projects. Most aspects of craft can be taught, but we are limited by the venue. We cannot do practical crafts e.g. paper making, basket making etc.   

 CREATING CARDSand B. Two groups working at creating greetings cards. No previous experience is required. Everything is provided for a small charge.Techniques will be demonstrated and skills and equipment shared.    

CROQUET Come and try Croquet.  Tuition and equipment provided. The venue is Knellwood House, Canterbury Road.Every week from Easter through to the October half term.    

CROSSWORDS  How to tackle all kinds of crosswords with particular attention to cryptic and looking at aids available in solving them.    

 DISCUSSION An informal and friendly group who discuss a wide range of topics, some serious, some lighthearted. Whether you wish to share your views with others or just to listen, you are assured of a warm welcome.

DRAWING Members are encouraged to work on their own projects, using any drawing media of their choice i.e. pencil, pastels, charcoal, etc with help and advice from the tutor.

DRAWING-BEGINNERS A year course covering the basics of drawing techniques. Pencil, pen and ink, charcoal and coloured crayons are covered. Suitable for complete beginners.  

FAMILY HISTORY COMPUTER A group exploring the use of the internet in family history research.

FAMILY HISTORY DISCUSSION  A self-help group for those who wish to trace their family history. Both beginners and more experienced researchers are welcome.

FINANCE/MONEY MATTERS To Study, on an informal basis, Finance and Money Matters relating to Home Economics.    

FLOWER ARRANGING.  Flower arrangement demonstration followed by a workshop supervised by tutor.

FOLK DANCING We dance traditional, square and barn dances. Great fun and good exercise. No previous knowledge  required.

FRENCH BASIC  For those with basic knowledge of French, using the BBC publication French Experience 1

FRENCH CHAT A small group for fluent French speakers who are interested in French culture and current affairs. Members must be prepared to take an active part in conversation and discussion..

FRENCH INTERMEDIATE An intermediate group to encourage people with a knowledge of the language to practise and improve their written and spoken skills in everyday situations.

GARDENING Sessions are arranged on a variety of gardening topics. Visits to gardens will be arranged.  

GERMAN—BEGINNERS A friendly relaxed weekly class led by an experienced language tutor for those with no German. Those with a little German will be welcome but the Course will start from the very beginning and will assume no knowledge of the language.

GERMAN CONTINUED  For those with some basic German or those who half remember School German.

GERMAN CONVERSATION A friendly, relaxed weekly class led by an experienced language tutor for those with basic German.

GOOD COMPANIONS A group for those seeking opportunities foroutings and/or holidays, something to do at weekends or simply making new friends. Monthly meetings to discuss arrangements and to welcome new members.     

HANDBELLS To develop the skills involved in making music using handbells and to have fun doing it.  

HISTORY EUROPEAN Continuing our study of European and British social and political history (for details see separate article in Newsletter).

HISTORY-TALKING ABOUTA self-help group that researches on a personal basis a topic chosen by the group. This research is debated by the group to identify any implications/consequences for present day matters.

 INDUSTRIAL ARCHAEOLOGY AND SCIENCE Lectures by visiting speakers or group members on our industrial heritage and aspects of science. Three visits arranged during the year.

ITALIAN CONTINUEDA self-help group for those with a little knowledge of Italian, to include grammar, reading, listening and basic conversation.

ITALIAN CONVERSATION  A self-help group for those able to converse in Italian, even hesitantly, and wishing to improve fluency.

JAZZ and ALL THATStudy of Jazz through the Ages.  Members bring in their own CDs and tapes, which leads to discussion.

KEEP FIT (Ladies) 1, 2 & 3.  To improve and maintain mobility and fitness, working to one's own potential with a qualified leader.

KEEP FIT (Men) 1 & 2.  To improve and maintain fitness using apparatus (eg cycles, rowers, weights etc) with a qualified leader

KEEP FIT (Men) BEGINNERS To improve and maintain fitness, using apparatus (eg cycles, rowers, weights etc).

KEEP FIT - LADIES FITNESS TRAINING 1 & 2 To improve and maintain fitness, using apparatus, under the supervision of a qualified instructor.

KEYBOARD SKILLS.  A four week course designed to teach participants how to improve their typing skills when using a computer.

LINE DANCING A form of dancing which does not need a partner. Provides fun exercise with a qualified tutor.

LINE DANCING (Beginners)  Line Dancing for absolute beginners, who then move on.

MAH JONGIntroduction to and practice of an ancient Chinese game, played with tiles.

MATHS FOR FUNWorkingto investigate unusual and interesting mathematical ideas.No prior knowledge is required, only a desire to discover the magic of mathematics.    

MILITARY HISTORY.  A self help group  studying and making presentations on aspects of military history   

MUSIC APPRECIATION The group is intended to bring together members who enjoy listening to a wide range of classical music in an informal atmosphere. At each meeting their will be a presentation on some aspect of music eg a period, a composer, or selected works of a composer. Presentations will be made by the Group Leader, but other group members are invited (absolutely no pressure) to make presentations if they wish.

MYTHOLOGY AND LEGENDS. A new group to explore Mythology and Legends which abound. The emphasis will be on enjoying this fascinating aspect of our history.

OPERA AND BALLET A self help appreciation group concentrating on Operas and Ballets but also including some classical /vocal music.

PAINTING BEGINNERS Yr 1 For new students with no or very little painting knowledge. This course runs for one year covering the basics of water based painting. Basic drawing skills would be an advantage. Advice on materials to buy will be given at the first lesson.

PAINTING BEGINNERS Yr2.   A years course which continues to build on the basic knowledge and enables students to practice techniques acquired. Demonstrations will be given and lessons are structured.              

PAINTING 1,2,3,and 4. A chance to paint (any media) and exchange ideas, tips, and techniques with like minded colleagues.

PATCHWORK We are currently working on the various methods of Folded Patchwork but members are helped and encouraged with any patchwork project they are working on. Join us what ever level your skill.

PETANQUE (boules) This is a friendly group who play for fun and always encourage new comers as well as people who have played before. At the end of play some join together for a pub snack, a drink, and a chat.

PILATES Gentle exercise with stretching and controlled breathing, supervised by an experienced tutor.

PLAY READING  The reading and discussion of 1-3 act plays chosen by group members. The aim is for pleasure.

POETRY FOR PLEASURE  We are a lively group, enjoying a wide range of poetry. Members chose different themes for each meeting and then make their own choice of poems to read and discuss. Once each term we choose a poet to study in greater depth.

PUB LUNCHES I & II Good food and conversation with fellow members in stimulating venues, chosen for their range of good food reasonably priced. Leaders must be told in advance of an intention to be present.  

QUIZ  A focal point for participating in any local quizzes.    

READING FOR PLEASURE Everyone gets their chance to choose a book which is then discussed by the group. Why not join us to read for pleasure in a group context.

RUSSIAN  New members are welcome. No prior knowledge is required. Those in the group who have some knowledge will help newcomers.  

SHAKESPEARE A self-help group who meet to discuss Shakespeare and his works, and to watch videos of his plays.New members very welcome.   

SINGING FOR FUN  We sing various pieces of music, including items from the shows, folk songs etc, with the emphasis on singing for the fun of it. We give occasional concerts to various groups.

SOCIAL HISTORY We explore various aspects  relating to ordinary peoples’ lives throughout history, mainly within the UK. Group participation is encouraged and welcome but above all  we have fun.

SPANISH . We are a small group and are reading and translating “Marina” by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. It is a thriller, written for the younger reader, and will keep us in suspense for the season. We also enjoy chatting about current events and other topics. Come and join us if you get by in Spanish. We all help each other in this friendly group.

SPANISH CONTINUED  Spanish Continued will follow "Mastering Spanish" by Robert Clarke, Macmillan Master Series. This book can be ordered from Book Boyz in Farnborough. It follows Robert and Joan Robinson travelling around Spain. It not only covers conversation and exercises but also touches on grammar. If you want to join us you have to be motivated and be prepared to put in some effort..

STROLLERS. Country walks of 2½ to 3 miles taking 1¼ to 1½ hours. These are on reasonably flat public rights of way through farms and heathland, with an optional pub lunch. Boots or walking shoes and wet weather gear are required.   

SUGARCRAFT. A self help group whose members explore the various techniques involved in turning sugarpaste into cake decorations suitable for all occasions. No previous experience necessary. (Autumn and Spring Terms only.)      

TABLE TENNIS. Playing table tennis together on a friendly and fun basis.        

TENNIS A group who play throughout the year, weather permitting.  

TENNIS.SHORT This group will be taught Short Tennis by a qualified tennis coach. Short Tennis is played on a Badminton court with a sponge ball and junior tennis rackets.

THEATRE  Visits to the theatre for performances of musicals, opera, ballet and drama.                                    

TOWN AND COUNTRY VISITS Will be to places of general and historical interest, with guides where available.  

TRANSPORT   A self help group studying all aspects of transport.   

TRAVELOGUEForeign countries and possible holiday destinations seen through the eyes of thetraveller, supplemented by PowerPoint presentations, video and slides.   

TREKKERS A walking group aiming to cover about 8 miles on each outing. The group will walk on every 2nd Wednesday andopen to members of other walking groups. It is intended that most walks will be circular, starting and finishing from the same point, usually a Public House, however a few might be single direction walks with use of Public Transport in the other direction..

WALKING (Wednesday 1 & 2), (Friday 1 & 2). Country walks of between five and six and a half miles, lasting for about two and a half hours. Occasional longer walksall day. A pub lunch is arranged if required. Boots or strong footwear highly recommended. (The Wednesday 1 group and the two Friday  groups are both closed to new members at present, but Wednesday 2 is a new group open to new members and to any from the existing groups who wish to transfer).   Walks continue every two weeks throughout the year

WATER AEROBICS. Fitness exercises in water. Suitable for non-swimmers.    

WINE APPRECIATION  Tasting of wines from around the world, led by an expert.  

WRITING FOR PLEASURE   We welcome newcomers with open arms, to this happy band. Our aim is to explore many genres of writing; we do prose, short stories, articles, poetry, plays, all interspersed with chat and laughter

YOGA INTERMEDIATE1 and 2. Suitable for those members who have been doing yoga for at least one year. Focus is on body awareness, breathing, stretching muscles, mobilizing joints to release tension, to calm the mind and to relax, to connect body mind and spirit. Careful instruction is given, postures are demonstrated with modifications & adjustments to suit individuals as necessary.

YOGA MIXED ABILITY A mixed ability group taking people who have no knowledge of Yoga through to a reasonable state of flexibility and relaxation. The exercises allow beginners to gradually improve their flexibility while those who have made more progress can take the exercises to a more demanding state.
